The major centre of brain / body communication is the triad comprising of the limbic system, the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. This arrangement can be viewed as a large funnel where the top part is the higher cortical brain and the hypothalamus and pituitary gland is the bottom stem of the funnel.
Cells in the hypothalamus transduce or transfer coded information in the form of electrical impulses via the nerves into messenger molecules of the body. This is the essence of brain body communication.
This form of neuro endocrine transmission conveys neural activity from the brain into hormonal flow from the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is viewed as the master gland regulating most hormonal activity throughout the body.
The hypothalamus is very small area about the size of a pea and weights only a few grams. It receives signals from many parts of the brain, therfore it functions as an information exchange centre regulating processes involving the entire body. One particular connection is with the limbic system where sensory, emotional and cognitive functions are integrated.
